How to Shop for a Tempur-Pedic

Modern bedroom with white linens and pillows
Back to the Journal

Tempur-Pedic has eight or nine different mattress models at any given time, and the differences between them can be hard to feel in a five-minute lie-down. Here's how we help customers in our sleep gallery narrow the field to the one that actually fits.

Start with sleep position

Side sleepers generally want softer mattresses that let the shoulder and hip sink in; Cloud or ProAdapt Soft are the typical match. Back sleepers usually want medium; ProAdapt Medium or Breeze Medium. Stomach sleepers (rare among adults) want firmer; ProAdapt Firm or an extra-firm hybrid.

Talk about temperature

If you sleep hot — or your partner does, or you live in Austin — the Breeze series runs up to 10° cooler than the rest of the Tempur line. If that's not your issue, you can save $1,000+ by skipping it.

“The most expensive Tempur is not the best Tempur for you. The right one is the one that matches how you actually sleep.”

Ignore the try-at-home gimmick (mostly)

Every Tempur-Pedic comes with a 90-night sleep trial. This is genuinely useful for testing a mattress you've narrowed down to one or two. It is not useful for browsing the whole line-up from your bedroom. Narrow it in the showroom first.

Don't forget the base

A TEMPUR-Ergo adjustable base can completely change the experience of a mattress. It's especially valuable for people who read in bed, have reflux, or snore. Most customers who try it end up ordering one.

What to do in 20 minutes at the showroom

Come in. Tell us how you sleep (position, partner preferences, temperature, any pain). Our certified consultants will pull 2–3 candidates from the current line-up. Lie on each for at least 10 minutes (not 2 — 10, with your partner). The right one will be obvious.
